Goddess/Muse Rods
(sterling silver furniture to your order from my collection)
The history of fly fishing is resplendent with the muse and goddesses. The first English writings on fishing are attributed to Dame Juliana Barnes, whose very name gives the authority of both Roman and Celtic deities to our sport. The fly fishers’ catch and release in many ways fulfills the chivalric stories as they adapted to the American experience, through both the conquest of nature and the release of the princess (trout).
This series of rods has reel keeper rings made from Victorian spoons graced with nudes. The reel cup may be plain, providing space for your monogram or dedication. Reel spacers are of exotic hardwoods or burl-wood. Museum quality cork rings are used in the grips. The winding cheeks are machined from 1890’s period rod ferrules. Silk wraps hold a sterling rope hook keeper and black snake guides. The stripping guide is your choice of colored agate. These rods cast with an ease and grace reflecting the past.
The rod taper is one I discovered on a scrap of paper in the back of a dog-eared copy of Garrison-Carmichael’s A Masters Guide to Building a Bamboo Fly Rod. This found taper has become a favorite to build and fish. Little mysteries such as the origin of the taper are part of a builder’s lore. And, certainly, a gift from my muse. If fly fishing is your passion, fish beautifully. Fish Bamboo. Contact me for options and prices. Jon Lyman
